Located in the Urasando area of Maruyama, Sapporo, Hare Café is a popular spot known for its wholesome lunches and beautifully presented desserts. Here, you can enjoy a gluten-free lunch served with house-made rice flour bread.
On this visit, we stopped by the café and tried their vegetable-packed deli plate lunch.
Access to Hare Café – Near Maruyama Park Station, Sapporo
Hare Café is about a 4–6 minute walk from Maruyama Park Station. From the station exit, head east (toward Odori), then turn right at the 22-chome intersection—the café will soon appear on your right-hand side.

The exterior has a calm, understated look with a white and gray color palette. The logo sign reading “Hare Café” serves as a clear landmark, and an A-frame sign at the entrance displays the lunch and dessert menu.

About Hare Café: A Gluten-Free Café in Maruyama

Hare Café opened in March 2022 with the concept of “a place where adults can relax and unwind.” The name reflects the wish that visitors will leave feeling as bright and uplifted as on a sunny day.
The interior is simple and stylish, with a natural modern atmosphere softened by the warmth of wooden counters and tables. In this calm setting, guests can enjoy wholesome lunches and carefully crafted desserts.

One of the most popular lunch options is the vegetable deli plate (¥1,950), which comes with two types of house-made rice flour bread. It features a colorful assortment of seasonal vegetables, thoughtfully balanced into a satisfying meal.

Another highlight is the luxurious dessert plate, generously prepared with seasonal fruits. The selection changes monthly, and during our visit in March, a sakura-themed dessert plate (¥2,700) was available.
(Some items on the dessert plate are made with Hokkaido wheat.)

The display case inside the café also features sweets from their sister store, “Hare Tokidoki, Shikaku,” which was relocated and reopened within Hare Café in November 2025.
From scones made with Hokkaido-grown spelt flour to beautifully presented tarts, many of these items are also available for takeout.

A Vegetable-Packed Delight: Trying Hare Café’s Deli Plate Lunch
This time, we ordered the café’s signature Vegetable Deli Plate (¥1,950). The set includes a plate of six deli items and salad, served with house-made rice flour bread and a bowl of soup. You can choose two types of bread from a selection of seven.
(The deli plate lunch is gluten-free.)

After much deliberation, we chose the egg bread and a savory cake (cake salé). “Cake salé” is a French-style savory cake—essentially a non-sweet baked dish made with ingredients like vegetables.

Getting to try both rice flour bread and a rice flour cake salé…
That’s seriously exciting!
After a short wait, our meal arrived. The plate in front of us was so vibrant and generous that it almost took our breath away.

Six different deli dishes made with seasonal vegetables—such as okra, celery, purple cabbage, mushrooms, pumpkin, and Brussels sprouts—are arranged on a single plate. Each item is prepared differently, from marinades to sautéed dishes, allowing you to enjoy a variety of flavors with every bite.

The plate also comes with a generous serving of lettuce, topped with a house-made onion dressing served on the side. The gentle sweetness of the onion makes it incredibly moreish—you’ll find yourself going back for more.
The caramelized nuts served in a small glass dish are perfect as a palate cleanser. They were also delicious when paired with the lettuce.

The egg bread is generously topped with egg salad, piled so high it looks like it might spill over. When we broke it open, the bread was soft and fluffy—and still pleasantly warm. The light yet slightly chewy texture unique to rice flour made it especially enjoyable.

The rice flour cake salé has a light texture, similar to a muffin, offering a different experience from the bread. It’s a nice contrast that adds to the overall enjoyment of the meal.

The soup of the day was burdock root potage. Its smooth, light texture carried the gentle, earthy flavor of burdock, making it a comforting and warming addition to the meal.。

After the meal, we also ordered a coffee (set price ¥500). The blend was clean and easy to drink, perfect for enjoying slowly alongside the caramelized nuts we had saved.

Overall, the meal was very satisfying, yet the variety of flavors in each deli kept it interesting until the very last bite. While it’s still relatively rare to find cafés serving rice flour bread on-site, being able to enjoy such a well-crafted and abundant gluten-free set menu felt truly special.
Tarts and Scones from Their Sister Store “Hare Tokidoki, Shikaku”
Another highlight of Hare Café is the selection of tarts and baked goods from their sister store, “Hare Tokidoki, Shikaku,” located within the same space. In addition to these takeaway items, the café is also known for its beautifully presented dessert plates, which have become a popular choice among visitors.
While I usually focus on gluten-free options, I do occasionally enjoy wheat-based sweets as well. This time, I picked up a strawberry tart (¥800) and a plain scone (¥380) from the display case to take out.

Even though I only purchased a single tart, it was carefully placed in a cute, perfectly sized box. This thoughtful packaging made it easy to carry without worrying about it getting damaged.

Both the tart and the scone had a pleasantly nutty, toasty flavor unique to spelt wheat. The more you chew, the more the wheat’s natural aroma unfolds—simple, yet deeply satisfying.
