旭川GO&Vegeアイキャッチ TakeOut

Located in Asahikawa, GO&Vege is a takeout shop that opens only twice a week. Despite its limited schedule, it has built a loyal following, with lines forming on business days and popular items often selling out early.

The shop offers a selection of comforting, wholesome foods, including vegetable-packed bento boxes and naturally fermented breads. Its menu reflects a variety of food philosophies, incorporating elements of fermentation, raw food cuisine, and other health-conscious approaches. Visitors will also find gluten-free baked goods among the offerings.

For this article, I stopped by in person to see what makes GO&Vege so popular and to try some of its menu items firsthand.

Access & Business Style|A Takeout Shop Open Only Twice a Week

Located about an 11-minute walk from Asahikawa Station, GO&Vege is a takeout-only shop. Open just twice a week, it has become a destination for loyal customers who plan their visits around its limited business days. It’s not uncommon to see a line forming around opening time.

Inside, the compact yet thoughtfully arranged space is filled with baked goods and specialty food items. Toward the back, you’ll find a display case stocked with freshly baked bread alongside a selection of bento boxes. Since the shop is run by a single owner, there may be a short wait during busy periods, but the attentive and careful service makes it well worth it.

Some days, popular items sell out before closing time. If there’s something specific you’d like to try, it’s best to visit earlier in the day. Business days and available products may change, so be sure to check the shop’s official Instagram for the latest updates before visiting.

What Is GO&Vege?|Wholesome Meals and Treats Inspired by Diverse Food Philosophies

GO&Vege店舗窓のサイン文字

GO&Vege is a takeout shop built around the concept of “delicious meals and treats that nourish the body.” Its menu features vegetable-packed bento boxes and carefully crafted snacks made with thoughtfully selected ingredients.

Owner Ms. Nakajima has explored a wide range of food philosophies over the years, including vegetarian, vegan, macrobiotic, Buddhist vegetarian cuisine (shojin), and raw food diets. Drawing on those experiences, she gradually developed a style that incorporates these ideas in a practical and approachable way for everyday life.

These various food philosophies are naturally reflected in the shop’s bento boxes and snacks. One of the appealing aspects of GO&Vege is that customers can choose items that suit their mood or physical condition on any given day. Regardless of whether someone follows a particular diet, the shop offers wholesome meals and treats that are accessible and enjoyable for a wide range of people.

“Spring brings the pleasant bitterness of wild mountain vegetables. Summer offers fresh, juicy produce. Autumn is full of naturally sweet ingredients. I hope people can enjoy the flavors of each season,” says Nakajima.

On business days, customers often begin lining up before opening time to purchase bento boxes and baked goods, and popular items sometimes sell out early. The careful craftsmanship and attention to detail that come from being a one-person operation are part of what makes the shop so beloved by locals.

Because GO&Vege embraces a variety of food philosophies, some products do contain wheat. However, certain breads are made with Hokkaido-grown wheat combined with ingredients such as glutinous rice or hulled barley, reflecting an effort to reduce gluten content where possible.

The bento menu varies from day to day. While some dishes may contain wheat, there are also many days when the menu consists primarily of wheat-free side dishes.

The shop’s philosophy of creating food that is gentle on the body through carefully selected ingredients and thoughtful preparation overlaps in many ways with a gluten-free lifestyle.

Rather than focusing on restrictions, GO&Vege encourages a positive approach to eating—one that helps you choose foods that make your body feel its best.

Choosing from a Gluten-Free Perspective

Since this is a gluten-free information site, I asked a few questions about gluten-free options.

When I asked about gluten-free items available at GO&Vege, I was told that the following sweets are made without wheat ingredients:

  • Rice Flour and Nut Biscotti
  • Assorted Chiffon Cakes
  • Lemon Cake
  • Gateau Chocolat
  • Carrot Cake

In addition, the following Japanese-style sweets occasionally appear on the menu and are also made without wheat ingredients:

  • Ohagi made with glutinous brown rice
  • Zenzai (sweet red bean soup) made with house-made bean paste

As mentioned earlier, the ingredients used in the bento boxes vary from day to day, so the use of wheat depends on the menu for that particular day.

Regarding seasonings, the shop’s homemade miso is made with rice koji and does not contain wheat. However, the soy sauce used does contain wheat.

If you would like to choose gluten-free options, it’s best to keep these points in mind and check the day’s menu before making your selection.

What I Tried|Recommended Menu Items

For this visit, I purchased not only some of the shop’s gluten-free products, but also several breads and prepared foods made with wheat.

Rice Flour Chiffon Cakes

GO&Vegeの米粉シフォン3種

I tried three varieties: Plain (390 yen), Organic Lemon (400 yen), and Walnut Cinnamon (400 yen). All three are gluten-free chiffon cakes made with rice flour.

The first thing that surprised me was how light they felt. The texture was airy and fluffy, yet not merely soft—it also had a pleasant elasticity and chewiness. Rice flour chiffon cakes can vary greatly in texture, but this was one of the most springy versions I’ve ever tried, making it a particularly memorable experience.

The texture was gentle and comforting, almost like soft white bread, while the flavors of the eggs and other ingredients became more pronounced with each bite. It was the kind of cake that immediately made me want another piece. The cakes are made with free-range eggs from Farm Lela in Higashikawa, and perhaps that rich flavor contributes to their distinctive texture as well.

The Walnut Cinnamon variety had a warm, fragrant cinnamon aroma, while the Organic Lemon flavor stood out for its refreshing citrus notes and subtle hint of pleasant bitterness, which I especially enjoyed.

Rice Flour and Nut Biscotti

GO&Vegeの米粉とナッツのビスコッティ

This thick-cut biscotti (550 yen) is packed with walnuts, almonds, cashews, and pumpkin seeds. It is more substantial than it looks, and each bite releases the rich, roasted flavors of the nuts.

In fact, this biscotti was the reason I decided to revisit GO&Vege. I had purchased it by chance on a previous visit, and its flavor stayed with me long afterward. It was one of those treats I simply wanted to experience again.

The biscotti has just the right amount of crunch, delivering the satisfying texture you would expect while allowing the flavors of the ingredients themselves to shine.

The owner has described it on Instagram as “one of my favorite items, which I’ve been making since the shop first opened.” Made with Hokkaido rice flour and free-range eggs, it contains an impressive amount of nuts—reportedly twice the weight of the rice flour used in the recipe. After tasting it, it was easy to understand why it has remained a customer favorite for so many years.

In addition to the regular size, the shop also occasionally offers a charity product called “Hashi Bisco.” Availability varies throughout the year.

Today’s Side Dish Set & Fermented Brown Rice Inari Sushi

The side dish set available that day (930 yen) included a main dish along with a generous assortment of side dishes. Dressed vegetables, simmered dishes, marinades, and other seasonal vegetable preparations allowed me to enjoy a variety of flavors in a single meal.

Each item was gently seasoned to highlight the natural flavors of the ingredients. As I ate, I found the meal increasingly comforting. There was a warmth to it that reminded me of home-cooked family meals.

Since opening, GO&Vege has sold rice and side dishes separately. According to the owner, this approach was chosen so that customers can select exactly the amount they need.

Rice sold separately (fermented brown rice): from 200 yen for 120g
Salted rice ball: from 310 yen

On this visit, I also picked up a Fermented Brown Rice Inari Sushi (480 yen).

GO&Vegeの酵素玄米おにぎり

Inside the sweet-and-savory seasoned tofu pouch was vinegared fermented brown rice mixed with walnuts. It may sound like an unusual combination, but the nutty flavor of the walnuts paired beautifully with the chewy texture of the rice.

The refreshing finish from the vinegared rice balanced the richness perfectly, creating an inari sushi that felt both satisfying and special.

Naturally Fermented Bread

GO&Vegeの天然酵母パン

This time, I purchased three varieties: Salted Butter, Double Almond, and Walnut Cheese Stick.

The breads are made with Hokkaido-grown wheat and baked using homemade yeast and Hoshino natural yeast. Free from unnecessary additives, they have a simple, honest flavor that allows the quality of the ingredients to shine through.

The well-risen dough develops deeper flavor as you chew. Another appealing characteristic is its light finish—the richness never feels heavy. As someone who had not eaten wheat-based bread for quite some time, I found it surprisingly easy and enjoyable to eat.

Many of our customers tell us, “I didn’t realize it was gluten-free until after I tried it,” or “I kept coming back before I even noticed.”

People choose gluten-free foods for many different reasons. Rather than offering them simply as an alternative, we continually work to improve our recipes so they can be a first-choice option that anyone can enjoy.

If you have the opportunity, we would be delighted to welcome you to our shop.

Rather than choosing something because you have to avoid certain foods, GO&Vege reminds us that sometimes the best choice is simply the one that tastes good.
