For such people, Cafe178 Miyanosawa, located near Miyanosawa Station on the Sapporo subway line, is the place you should know about. In this issue, we will introduce a plate menu with a dusty and gentle flavor centering on naturally grown rice balls and popular gluten-free desserts, along with a food report by the author.

Just a short walk from Miyanosawa Subway Station! Marked by a simple onigiri banner.

The banner was taken from the back side

About a two-minute walk from Miyanosawa Station, the westernmost stop on the Tozai Subway Line, you will see a banner with the onigiri (rice ball) symbol on the right side of the street. The store, a renovated house, has a simple yet chic appearance. It has a nice appearance that gently blends in with the residential area without being too conspicuous.

Go up the stairs to the store entrance.

The warmth of a house café can be felt in this shoe-less style entryway.

About Cafe178Miyanosawa

The interior of the restaurant catches the eye as soon as you enter. The wallpaper in the front of the restaurant, which is inspired by cherry blossoms in full bloom, is based on a painting by Van Gogh!

Cafe178 Miyanosawa opened on January 11, 2022 under the theme of “a cafe for adults where the body and mind can get in shape.

The restaurant boasts a gently flavored rice ball plate made with an abundance of naturally grown rice and vegetables, and gluten-free desserts.
The owner, Ms. Inaba, has been preparing elimination diet for her allergic daughter for more than 10 years. Using her skills, she makes her dishes by avoiding allergenic ingredients as much as possible and emphasizing the original flavors of the ingredients.

A chic and relaxing space. An electronic piano is placed in the back.

In addition to rice and vegetables grown by the owner, who is also a natural farmer, the ingredients used in the menu include organic or naturally farmed vegetables, seasonings made from organic ingredients, natural sea salt, and eggs from a heirloom farm.

It is now one of the most popular restaurants in the city, having been introduced in town magazines and on TV and radio as a place where you can enjoy healthy food in a relaxing atmosphere.

As an aside, the origin of the restaurant name “178” (ichi nana hachi) did not immediately come to mind. I wonder if you all have figured it out by now.

Yes, it was a number taken from the owner’s name (surname)!

Order the natural rice onigiri plate

I’m so excited to have so many small bowls.
I was glad to see that they put a film to wrap the onigiri to keep your hands clean.

The meal menu, which can be ordered throughout business hours from 9:00 to 16:00, is the “Naturally Grown Rice Onigiri Plate A or B”.
The author ordered plate B.The meal menu, which can be ordered throughout business hours from 9:00 to 16:00, is the “Naturally Grown Rice Onigiri Plate A or B”.
The author ordered plate B.

[Plate A] 2 rice balls, miso soup, omelet, 3 vegetable delicacies, 1 meat deli ¥1450

[Plate B] 2 rice balls, miso soup, omelet, vegetable deli x 3 ¥1250
200 yen discount on after-meal drinks

*9:00-10:00 limited menu
[Breakfast rice ball set] 2 rice balls, miso soup, 2 vegetable deli ¥980

There are six types of onigiri ingredients to choose from in the set: salt, sesame salt, sesame and bonito oil, plum, yukari soy sauce, and ginger soy sauce. For an additional 30 or 50 yen, you can choose from a wider variety of ingredients.

This time, I simply chose “Ume” and “Ginger Soy Sauce” with no extra charge, but when I reviewed the photos of my previous visit, it seems that I had chosen the same combination at that time (⊙ˍ⊙).

Choice of Onigiri Ingredients
At the time of the visit in August 2023

One onigiri is made with 80 grams (equivalent to one bowl of rice). It may seem somewhat small, but in my opinion it was just the right amount since it comes with a side dish and a bowl of miso soup with lots of ingredients.

If you have a small appetite, you can order a smaller size onigiri if you request it. On the other hand, if you are not satisfied, you can order additional individual rice balls.

The rice balls are cooked slightly hard in a gas oven and softly pressed for an exquisite texture that loosens in the mouth.

At the time of my visit, they were using Nanatsuboshi rice produced in Naganuma.
Natsuboshi rice is not very viscous and has a light texture, which is one of my favorite characteristics. It is delicious, with the flavor of the rice coming through as you chew it!

A more pleasant point is that even the ingredients and seasonings, such as pickled plums, ginger, and soy sauce, are selected organic and naturally made.
It seems rare to find a store that is so particular about its onigiri, even among rice ball specialty stores.

A large cup of miso soup with lots of ingredients.
The miso is homemade using soybeans grown by the owner (master) himself, brewed with malt, and prepared.

The sweet and mild miso matches the flavor of the vegetables, giving the dish a gentle and mild taste. We also recommend sprinkling a little shichimi (seven spices) on top for accentuation.

Then there were three deli items of naturally grown vegetables and an egg omelet made from a heirloom egg that was soaked in broth.
Wondering what kind of journey it must have gone through from the hands of the producer to being served as a dish like this, I slowly chewed my way through the meal.

What is the famous dessert “pudding”?

Now, there is a dessert that you must try at least once when you come to this restaurant.
The name of it is “Pudim” (600 yen).

“Pudim” is a Brazilian word meaning pudding.
Generally, the most common style is either a hard pudding with condensed milk or a two-layer sponge and pudding.
This restaurant offers a gluten-free “Pudim” with two layers of rice flour cocoa sponge and pudding. They do not use condensed milk, but instead use the gentle sweetness of beet sugar.

“Pudim”has become a trendy sweet for 2023, and Cafe 178 Miyanosawa’s pudding was featured on TV.

We finally met “Pudim”, which we had given up on during our previous visit due to subsequent circumstances!

The pudding portion has a chunky texture and is quite moderate in sweetness. The deliciousness of heirloom eggs is directly conveyed. The rice flour cocoa sponge is more moist and juicy than expected. The bittersweet caramel sauce is a perfect match.

The pudim is served in slightly smaller cuts. It is great to be able to peruse it even after a meal.

The coffee I ordered with pudim was a deep roasted blend from RITARU COFFEE in the city.
(¥680 for a single item, ¥200 off if you order the meal menu)

This deep roasted coffee also goes well with pudim.
Although it is a deep roast, it is easy to drink as it does not have a strong bitter taste. The taste of pudim lingered in the mouth after I finished drinking it.

Cafe 178 Miyanosawa also offers many other tempting dessert menus.
Please check out their official Instagram to see their seasonal parfaits and other items.

Rice flour sweets and rice ball menu are also available for take-out.

In the corner of the store is a rice-flour pastry corner with cute muffins and snowball cookies. You can eat and drink in the store or take them home. Most are vegan plant-based, although some are wheat-free and some contain eggs or milk.

Onigiri plates are also available for take-out.
(from 1450 yen including container fee)

Unfortunately, pudim are not available for takeout, but the special pudding is available for takeout.
Take out on a nice day and enjoy lunch in the park.

We recommend that you call in advance to place your order for take-out.
The rice is cooked frequently for the best taste, so it is a good idea to consult with us in advance if you have a large order.

Cafe178Miyanosawa Store Information

The author was seated in a comfortable Karimoku 60 chair.

Rice balls, miso soup, omelets, and vegetable side dishes.
All of these are staples of home cooking and are familiar Japanese dishes to Japanese people.
However, when you examine the ingredients and think about making them properly, they can actually be very time-consuming.

Producers, processors, and those who prepare and transport the food. How many hands are involved before a dish is brought to the table?

I was filled with gratitude once again as I enjoyed the carefully crafted onigiri plate.
